Overview
You will be transferred from your hotel to the shores of Lake Victoria in Entebbe from where the speed boat will take you at 9.00 am to Ngamba Island – 45 min ride on the lake. Life jackets are provided. On the way you will cross the Equator which will be pointed out to you. On arrival at the island, home to 39 chimpanzees, you will be given a short introduction and briefing on the sanctuary. All chimpanzees have been rescued from private owners, not suitable holding facilities and international smugglers. Obviously, the ideal option would be to re-introduce these orphaned chimpanzees into the wild again; however it is not possible due to their familiarization with humans, the lack of suitable forests and sometimes their inability to survive in the wild by themselves. The sanctuary is therefore a good alternative to give them a suitable habitat and the company of their kind. By visiting the island you are supporting this project. The entrance and activity fees paid go directly towards helping cover the recurring costs of the island sanctuary and ensuring the wellbeing of the chimpanzees. You will be guided to the viewing platforms when it is feeding time and get the option to see the chimpanzees from up close.
During feeding time you will be able to see the many different personalities and characters amongst the group, have more time to seek further information from the care takers and take pictures.
At 12.00 you will be taken back by boat to the mainland where you will meet your driver guide.
